V&A Installation

24.09.2010 – Stephen Holmes

On my way to a TEDx London function at the Science Museum, came across this rather inspiring moving installation for the V&A, in the South Kensington Station underpass.

The logo has been divided into three parts which spin on different axises, pausing at intervals to display the completed logo. What’s genius about this, is that it can be viewed from both sides, which is real testament to the ingenuity of the pieces creator and also the logo’s designer the late Alan Fletcher. Designed in 1989, it’s a classic identity, which I’m sure will be around for many more decades to come.

Not sure I can say the same about the Science Museum’s latest rebrand. The new logo has a retro feel to it, reminiscent of one of 8vo’s Hacienda posters from the early 90′s. Though I really like it’s boldness, I doubt it will stand the test of time, compared to Fletcher’s work of brilliance.

T9 – Predictive Text

Really interesting article from Wired about the origins of T9 (predictive text) on mobile phones and how it was born out of the creators work on products for people with disabilities.

With around 4 billion (yep, that’s BILLION) phones still in in the wild using T9 (despite the march of touchscreen smart phones), it’s a massively important and influential technology that has truly entered the publics’ day to day life.

B2B Marketing and Social Media

This is a really nice video about the power of Social Media and how B2B is leading B2C in it’s uptake. And with a Dave Brubeck soundtrack, how can you go wrong?

Tube Escalator

Tube Escalator

Just a really nice industrial image of the escalators on the tube – love the pattern nature of each step.

A dream career from Waltham Forest College

Waltham Forest College Advertising Campaign

Now, I’m all for further and higher education (I’m a product of it myself) but having seen these recent adverts for Waltham Forest College around the tube station up in Walthamstow I can’t help thinking that they’re just a touch uninspiring.

The rainbow device that they’re using, mmm… kinda’ makes it look more like the ads are something to do with religion and perhaps more suited to something for the Church of England.

A missed opportunity I think to really appeal and capture the imagination of young people in the borough and increase the numbers carrying on in education and training.
