BLOODYBIGSPIDER / ABOUT US
Simple.
Bloodybigspider is a graphic design agency based in London.
Let’s not muck about with silly descriptions like ‘Brand Consultants’, ‘Imagination Engineers’ and other such waffle. We like to be at the sharp end; we offer creative solutions and then we implement them.
We’re all Graphic Designers, no Account Handlers here thank-you-very-much, we just don’t have time for a game of Chinese Whispers, we assume you don’t either.
Nor do we have any lengthy and cryptic creative processes that look suspiciously like they’ve been copied from an Edward de Bono book, or creative ‘away-days’ with you to the Lake District (sorry). We just ask simple effective questions that help us to understand what you want to say, who you want to say it to and what reaction you want to create.
Once we’ve finished grilling you, it’s time for us to start the hard work; coming up with creative solutions that’ll come in on-budget and on-time.
Design & Advertising is not about how pretty something looks. It’s about creating something that is going to solve a problem – which, when it boils down to it is “Will it achieve what you want it to?”. If the answer is no, then you’ve just wasted a load of money (something looking nice and something that’ll solve your problem are not necessarily one and the same). This makes it important to really understand your needs, which makes us ask lots of questions (with “Why?” being the most frequent). Some people see this as an annoyance, we see it as doing the job properly.
We’ve worked on a whole range of projects; identity, branding, literature, marketing support materials, music packaging and advertising, from something as physically small as an invitation up to something as large as a set of exhibition graphics.
The examples of work on the Bloodybigspider website will show our thinking in action and the results it produces. If you like what you see and have a project you’d like to talk through with us, please drop us a line info@bloodybigspider.com or give us a call on +44 (0)20 8772 4549 / 020 8772 4549 and ask to speak to Stephen Holmes, the Creative Director of Bloodybigspider.

BLOODYBIGSPIDER / IDENTITY
CLIENT / Jake Phipps Design BRIEF / A furniture designer making high-end custom pieces, required an identity that would look classical but with a twist. SOLUTION / Incorporating the ‘J’ and ‘P’ of Jake Phipps to create a monogram – using custom drawn characters. The name of the company set in a very English typeface (Gill Sans) to enhance the traditional feel of the logo.
CLIENT / Tanyaco BRIEF / To create an identity for a large-scale property developer and then apply it to stationery. SOLUTION / Create the identity from a photograph of some lovely green grass. This gives the feeling that they really care about how the land looks after they’ve finished knocking down / building on a site and that the site will look lovely and fresh instead of covered in rubble.
CLIENT / Ascension BRIEF / A marketing agency required a re-brand, to make them appear more contemporary and to echo their ability to elevate their clients. SOLUTION / Shorten their name to just ‘Ascension’ from ‘Ascension Consulting Limited’. Set the copy in a modern and relaxed typeface. Design a ‘butterfly’ marque to encapsulate their values of “helping clients to change for the better and lifting them up”.
CLIENT / Digital Craftsmen BRIEF / To re-brand a digital agency that created websites and back-end coding for online applications and both Intra and ExtraNets. SOLUTION / We created a mark that is based on the system of hallmarking for jewellery that helped to convey the company’s passion for quality in the work they produced. The individual elements of the hallmark all relate to aspects of the company. A sans serif typeface was chosen that had a feel of technology about it but didn’t look traditionally ‘techy’. Colours usually associated with tradition and quality were then applied (dark purple and green), which gain helps to reinforece the company’s attitude towards craftsmanship in the work they produce for their clients.
CLIENT / Completion BRIEF / To name and create an identity for a new estate agents and financial advisors in London, aiming at 20-45 year olds. SOLUTION / Give the company a satisfying name (completing on a property is the happiest part of the process). As they were completing, all that was left was to “cross the T’s and dot the I’s” – so those parts of the letters were moved to the end to create a graphic.
CLIENT / London City East Learning Hub BRIEF / To create an identity for a new community learning centre based in East London. SOLUTION / By focussing on the idea of inclusion of the many different groups of users (young people, the unemployed, the elderly and those just wanting further education) we created a graphic that shows how these groups come together to form the Learning Centre.
CLIENT / Juice BRIEF / Create a simple identity for a new Public Relations company based on it’s existing name – Juice. SOLUTION / We took a light hearted view and kept the identity simple, with clean lower case sans serif type and a simple colour scheme – a different colour for every application of the Juice logo. Our initial thinking came from the visual pun of ‘orange juice’ and developed from there.
CLIENT / Pernille Schlander BRIEF / Design a range of stationery for a photographer (including: letterheads, compliment slips & business cards). SOLUTION / To print images of her work with contact details on one side of everything, so that she was also sending out a portfolio of her work. The other side was printed in uppercase Franklin Gothic from her desktop printer – making the images the focus of every piece.
BLOODYBIGSPIDER / ADVERTISING
CLIENT / Cass Business School BRIEF / Show how choosing Cass Business School is the right choice for any student looking for a business school to attend. SOLUTION / With a series of adverts, each showing either a positive point for choosing Cass or a negative point about not selecting Cass. Using a combination of short headlines and witty images, with body copy to give more details about Cass.
CLIENT / 01010 BRIEF / Create adverts to promote 01010 and it’s services, how once they’re hired, a client will have an easy life – that there are things they need never do again. SOLUTION / Strong headlines stating what they’ll never have to do again once they’ve hired 01010. The copy below the attention grabbing images explains the scenario alluded to in the imagery and headline, ending with a strong call to action.
CLIENT / Roadhouse BRIEF / A bar/club/restaurant in Covent Garden was looking to increase the number of people eating there. SOLUTION / We created a series of posters that were in keeping with the brand’s sense of humour by showing how the food starts out (eg: a live chicken for the dish ‘Sizzling Chicken Fajitas’). These adverts ran across the London Underground and various magazines.
CLIENT / Roadhouse BRIEF / A bar/club/restaurant in Covent Garden was looking to build on it’s fun reputation and become more popular with their target audience. SOLUTION / A poster campaign for the Royal Opera House was running at the time around Covent Garden. We decided to create a pastiche of those posters which fell in line with the sense of humour of Roadhouse’s clients.
CLIENT / 2020Media BRIEF / Design and copywrite adverts to promote 2020 Media as being both a service focused and professional web hosting company. SOLUTION / To use ‘monkeys in a barrel’ to represent their competitors (in regards to the staff they employed) and liquorice allsorts to show how their technology could be pick-and-mixed to suit the customers’ needs. They were run in a selection of web magazines in the UK.
BLOODYBIGSPIDER / LITERATURE
CLIENT / Horlicks BRIEF / To design a 28page booklet to promote the newly rebranded Horlicks to new mothers and mothers of young children. SOLUTION / Create a ‘handbag friendly’ size booklet containing lots of information and tips about how mothers can relax, using lots of life-style imagery and informal.
CLIENT / Park Place Property Fund BRIEF / To promote a new investment fund, that specialises in ‘bridging loans’ on commercial property for companies, to potential investors. SOLUTION / A square hard-backed book detailing all the information about the fund (terms, legal implications, financial forecasts, etc…) using occasional full page images of bridges (to represent the ‘bridging loan’) to break up the copy and create a high value and credible publication for potential investors.
CLIENT / Well Women Centre BRIEF / Design an annual report that would help move the organisation forward in terms of look and to also clearly explain what the centre has achieved over the previous 12 months. SOLUTION / Re-draw the logo in a more modern way and create a new colour scheme, more in keeping with the centre’s services and target audience. The new typography and colour scheme was continued throughout the annual report giving it a more relaxed feel to their previous reports. The project included; the design of a new grid, creating a variety of graphs and tables, extensive retouching of supplied imagery and typesetting.
CLIENT / B3 Designers BRIEF / Design a brochure that would showcase the work of the interior design company – B3 Designers. SOLUTION / The brochure needed to be heavy on imagery to really show-off the work, as this was to be the main focus on the page everything else was designed to ‘disappear’ allowing the photographs to really stand out. To allow this, all copy was placed in light grey, with light-weight green line drawings to annotate the photographs. The brochure was designed with a very complex underlying grid to allow flexibility in layout and to keep future additions looking fresh whilst still in the same layout style.
CLIENT / Exertris BRIEF / To design a brochure aimed at gym managers to promote a new exercise bike. SOLUTION / Push the technological elements of the bike; the interactivity between the user and the arcade game displayed on the bike. With the use of bright colours and plenty of screen shots, the brochure was radically different to other promotional gym equipment literature.
CLIENT / Cass Business School BRIEF / Design a leaflet that can be added to the main syllabus brochure to show the last minute alterations to the programme content. SOLUTION / Using the existing style of Cass literature we typeset and layed out all the information and imagery complete with imagery for the front cover (a rolled up Financial Times).
CLIENT / Hotgroup BRIEF / A recruitment company required a folder and insert templates to hand out to potential clients. SOLUTION / To create a ‘fire’ marque to represent the Hot Group and add visual interest to both the folder and inserts. The company colours (red, white and blue) were used throughout. Templates were then design with half the ‘fire’ marque on so that it fitted with what was printed on the inside of the folder.
CLIENT / Tiscali BRIEF / To create a series of templates to present information about Tiscali to the media. SOLUTION / Design an A4 template that is subtly branded using corporate colours and shapes that allows flexibility for various types of content and layouts.
BLOODYBIGSPIDER / MISCELLANEOUS
CLIENT / Smirnoff Black Ice BRIEF / To give Smirnoff Black Ice a better branding opportunity for a publicity stunt where the public can win money, whilst keeping the money safe from theft. SOLUTION / To substitute real £50 notes with Smirnoff Black Ice bank notes. They were designed to be printed on waterproof paper and placed in a huge block of ice as part of the stunt.
CLIENT / Exceptional Records BRIEF / Was to design the album sleeve for the Vinyl and CD release of the new record, Foundation, from the band Bluprint. SOLUTION / To use an image of a DNA sequence with the letters of the 4 bases (GATC) over the top. The information about the album/band was subtly placed within the DNA letters so that readers would have to search for it – like a specific section within a DNA strain.
CLIENT / Exceptional Records BRIEF / Promote the releases from the artists on the Exceptional Records label to DJ’s and key influencers – over the Christmas period. SOLUTION / Placing a selection of the tracks onto a CD that was then sent out so the recipients could actually listen to the music. It was all designed to look like a big pile of chocolates; bright, sweet, tempting and festive. It was then sent out in a gold foil envelope to carry the chocolate theme through.
CLIENT / Ascension BRIEF / To create a website that would be inline with the marketing company’s new identity. It was required to be easily updatable and have an ExtraNet for their clients. SOLUTION / Using a combination of Flash and HTML we created a site that managed to remain visually interesting despite being ‘copy heavy’. A Content Management System (CMS) was also built specially for the site to allow the client to update the site themselves. The ExtraNet was created to be both easy to use and simple to manage by both the client (and in turn, their clients).
CLIENT / Learning Skills Council BRIEF / The LSC is the government department responsible for all education and training for the over 16 year olds in the UK. They needed a display at their headquarters to reinforce their values and to create an impact with visitors. SOLUTION / A series of panels that can be updated and fitted individually so the display can easily be changed. They incorporate photography of people in further education and training, with each panel displaying a specific statement about LSC.

BLOODYBIGSPIDER / PROFILE / STEPHEN HOLMES
This piece of copy is for the people that are unsure as to whether we're called Bloodybigspider or Bloody Big Spider:
Bloodybigspider is the name of the creative ideas driven design and advertising agency based in South London and run by Stephen Holmes, although some people also call us Bloody Big Spider we prefer not to have the spaces between Bloody Big Spider and really quite like it as just one joined up word - Bloodybigspider. Despite the name you won't find any pictures of spiders on our website so fear not all you arachnophobes - there'll be no Bloodybigspider (or even Bloody Big Spider) jumping out at you from the screen!
Bloodybigspider the design and advertising agency was set up in April 2004 by Stephen Holmes in London. Stephen Holmes was born in 1979 in Huddersfield in Yorkshire, before moving to Otley at the age of 5. There he went to Ashfield Primary School, Weston Lane Middle School before going to Prince Henry's Grammar School – which Stephen Holmes left at the age of 16 to go to Art College (Leeds College of Art and Design) to study a BTEC ND in Graphic Design. After Stephen Holmes had finished the two year full-time graphic design course in Leeds he went on to Bath Spa University College to continue studying Graphic Design – this time a BA (Hons) degree in Graphic Design. Upon graduation from the Bath Spa Univerity College Graphic Design course Stephen Holmes moved down to London to work in various graphic design agencies (he'd already worked at various graphic design agencies in Leeds and Bath). After several years of working in London, Stephen Holmes decided to set up his own Graphic Design agency, called Bloodybigspider, of which he is Creative Director.
Stephen Holmes and Bloody big spider have worked on many projects with numerous marketing and public relations (PR) agencies over the years and also with clients direct. These projects have been everything from bloody big to bloody small bits of design – all dependent on the creative idea led graphic design that the client requires – although most (but not all) of these clients are based in London.
